Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon has asked that his name be removed from the November ballot and has told county officials he intends to resign, according to Blount County Republican Party Chairman Larry Armstrong.
Moon, first elected sheriff in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, sent an email to county officials saying he intends to resign from office as soon as possible, according to Blount County officials.
The Blount County GOP has called a special meeting for Monday to discuss how to replace Moon on the ballot, Armstrong said.
Moon’s office had not responded to a request for comment as of Monday, according to Alabama’s 42 (WIAT), which first reported the story.
