Born 1781 in western North Carolina, ordained at 23, and a founder of the French Broad Association (six churches, Buncombe County, NC) before relocating to Alabama in 1816, settling first on Canoe Creek in St. Clair County. On 19 June 1819 he organized Mount Moriah, Blount County’s first Baptist church, in Murphree’s Valley. He went on to help organize churches across St. Clair, Blount, Shelby, and Jefferson counties, including Mount Zion (now First Baptist Church of Springville) and First Baptist Trussville (14 July 1821). He moved to Texas in April 1835 and died there four months later, survived by his wife Sarah T. McMinn Blythe and nine children.
