An old Creek trading path running along the ridge behind what is now Smoke Rise, connecting Ditto’s Landing on the Tennessee River near Huntsville down to Black Warrior Town, at the fork of the Mulberry and Sipsey. It appears in the primary record of the Creek War: the guide who led Colonel John Coffee south in October 1813 showed him a path that “had been reputed the Black Warriors path,” which Coffee followed about ten degrees east of south. Surveyed and improved into the Huntsville Road by 1818 and designated a federal post road in 1822, it carried the Huntsville-to-Tuscaloosa stage line through Blount County. Parts of the route are still traceable today.
