Killed instantly in September 1908 when a fast L&N passenger train struck his horse and buggy at a grade crossing near Reid’s Gap, as he and his daughter Alba Ann drove out to visit relatives. A Blount County jury awarded his estate and his daughter a combined $22,500 against the railroad.
