History Glossary

Col. Fitzhugh

Person

A railroad engineer and close friend of Col. J.F.B. Jackson. In 1877 he built Glenwood, the large house still visible north of downtown Blount Springs from US 31, as his own family’s home - choosing a spot where Jackson, a trusted friend close by, could look in on Fitzhugh’s wife and three daughters while Fitzhugh was away on railroad business. It is often mistaken for the hotel itself, though it faced the old Stagecoach Road, not the railroad, and it has stayed in the Fitzhugh family for nearly 150 years.

Appears in: Blount Springs.
