The founding couple of Hogeland Cemetery. Abraham Hogeland (1775-1841, marked Veteran, likely War of 1812-era service) and Catherine Powell Hogeland (1768-1830). Their family name outlived them directly on the map: Hogeland Creek was already labeled on an 1892 topo quad, just 51 years after Abraham’s death. After Catherine’s death Abraham remarried - his memorial lists a second wife, Elizabeth McAnally Hogeland (1818-1855), a daughter of John C. McAnally, tying the two families together directly. His own parents are documented a generation further back: LIEUT. William Hoagland (1740-1799) and Elizabeth Cooper Hoagland (1746-1805). The surname appears variously as Hogeland, Hogland, and Hoagland, often within the same family.
