George A. Powell

Person

Born 1794, died 1872. The Powell surname recurs as a married-in maiden name at Hogeland, Sapp, and Sulphur Spring cemeteries; George A. Powell, centrally located and old enough, is the likely shared root of that family.

Appears in: Nectar Cemetery.

Notable descendants:

  • Anthony Wayne Powell (1812-1908), Mary C. “Polly” Powell Hughes (1818-1882), Jonathan Winchester “Chess” Powell (1820-1916), Nancy Kirksey Powell Tidmore (1822-1906), Rebecca Laura Powell (1825-1910), Christopher Columbus Powell (1831-1921) - his documented children, confirmed via Find a Grave.
  • Grandchildren: 32 documented across 5 of these lines, the great majority born after 1850 - the generation this project’s pre-1850 cemetery research systematically missed. Selected: George Washington Powell (1849-1932); Mary C. “Mollie” Powell Byers (1852-1881); Nancy Jane Powell Keeney (1860-1935); E Aeria Hughes (1836-1897); James Miles Hughes (1839-1928); William Marvin “Moses” Hughes (1842-1930); Miles David Powell (1857-1918); Anthony Wayne Powell (1863-1940); Sarah Isabelle Powell Leonard (1869-1956); Epsie Mae Tidmore Ratliff (1844-1921); Elizabeth “Betty” Tidmore Daily (1844-1905); Henry M. Tidmore (1846-1875). Because the list runs to 32 names, the full grandchild list is recorded in the vault research note rather than here.
  • His own parents are documented a generation further back: James R. Powell Jr. (1759-1855) and Rebecca Bynum Powell (1770-1851).

Nine children, and four generations back. His memorial biography names nine children rather than the six documented in the family record above, adding Lunerva Rogers Powell, Alice L. Powell and Vialantha “Violanti” Elizabeth Powell. It also runs his own line back three further generations: son of James Powell and Rebecca Bynum, grandson of John Powell Jr. and Alice Brewer, and great-grandson of John Powell Sr. and Mary Cromwell. His wife Elizabeth “Betty” Kirksey Davis was a daughter of Jonathan and Nancy (Kirksey) Davis.
