Born 1763 in Frederick Town, Maryland. Served four separate enlistments in North Carolina militia and state troops between 1778 and 1781, including the Battle of King’s Mountain (7 October 1780) under Col. Isaac Shelby and Cowan’s Ford on the Catawba River, where he was present when General William Lee Davidson was killed defending the crossing against Cornwallis’s army. He removed to Blount County around 1817, settling in what his own pension file identifies as “Gurley’s Settlement.” Formally pensioned at $77.50 a year starting 4 March 1831, for 21 months of total service, and confirmed still receiving that pension in 1840.
