Robert Jemison Jr.

Person

Two different men share this name on this site, one generation apart. The elder Robert Jemison Jr. (1802-1871) was an antebellum Tuscaloosa businessman who built one of the largest stagecoach and mail-contract operations in the South, along with toll roads, toll bridges, and plank roads - his firm, Jemison, Ficklin, Powell and Companies, ran the stagecoach network through Blount County. His grandnephew of the same name, Robert Jemison Jr. (1878-1974), was the real-estate developer behind Jefferson County’s Mountain Brook, incorporated in 1942 and developed starting in 1929 as an estate-lot suburb centered on the Birmingham Country Club.

Appears in: Black Warrior Road & the Creek Removal (the elder Jemison) and The First Mountain Brook Was in Blount County (his grandnephew).
