Born 1798, died 1869 - the documented namesake of Selfville, a real Blount County place with its own post office (1889-1916). His family’s migration traced England, then Westmoreland County, Virginia, then Tennessee, before settling in Alabama.
Notable descendants:
- Vincent Garner Self Jr. (1834-1929) - son.
- William Self (born around 1826) - another documented son.
- A genuine research ceiling, checked rather than left open: Vincent Garner Self Sr. has no findable Find a Grave memorial. Every Blount County cemetery reachable through the site’s own indexes was searched for the Self surname, including Piney Grove Community Cemetery, where the county’s largest documented Self family is buried. He does not appear in any of them, so his family tree cannot be extended the way the other patriarch entries have been.
- A separate Self line, documented but not connected: a substantial Self family is recorded at Piney Grove Community Cemetery, headed by Pvt. Jesse Self (1828-1881) and Elizabeth Ratcliff Self (1828-1913), with seven children and further descendants through William Columbus Self (1851-1886) and Egbert Self (1877-1965). Jesse Self is the right generation to be a son of Vincent, but his memorial lists no parents at all, and no record found connects the two lines. They are noted here as a lead, not as descendants.
- One documented marriage tie: Egbert Self married Nancy Rice Self (1880-1934), whose mother was Elizabeth Sanders Rice (1850-1916) - a granddaughter of Capt. George McPherson. That link is to the Piney Grove Self line, not to Vincent’s.
