Canfield Sink

Place

Labeled on the 1895 USGS topo quad in the Blackburn Mountain/Reid Gap/Burn Mountain cluster southwest of Blount Springs - a real sinkhole feature, consistent with the karst limestone geology already documented for this area (Rickwood Caverns, Bangor Cave, Blount Springs’ own mineral springs). Known today, per Greg Caudle’s own direct local knowledge, simply as “The Sink” - the “Canfield” part of the name has dropped out of local usage even though it survives on the 1895 map.
