Thomas Absalom “Ab” Vaughn

Person

Born 18 February 1818, died 14 February 1902. His birth year fits well as the father of B.H. Vaughn, who built the bridge at Smith Ford by hand in 1895 - a 30-year generational gap, right for the era.

Appears in: Union Grove Cemetery. Related: B.H. Vaughn.

Notable descendants:

  • James Hart Vaughn (1840-1923), Mary Telitha Vaughn Gilliam (1842-1908), John Frank Vaughn (1843-1862), Nancy Elizabeth “Nannie” Vaughn Wall (1846-1907), Absolem Tillman “Till” Vaughn (1848-1913), Burrell Hartwell Vaughn (1852-1934), Sarah Ann Margrette Vaughn Burns (1856-1905), Rev Richard Wilson Vaughn (1860-1934), Josephene Francis ‘Fannie’ Vaughn Turner (1863-1943) - his documented children, confirmed via Find a Grave.
  • Grandchildren: 50 documented across 8 of these lines, the great majority born after 1850 - the generation this project’s pre-1850 cemetery research systematically missed. Selected: Hartwell Wood Vaughn (1874-1937); Martin Vaughn (1880-1931); William Absalom Gilliam (1868-1949); James T Gilliam (1869-1954); Jachin A “J.A.” Gilliam (1876-1946); Mary Jane “Mollie” Wall Watson (1867-1937); William Abner Wall (1869-1925); Martha Lou Wall Calvert (1872-1948); William Ira Vaughn (1868-1944); Rufus M Vaughn (1870-1945); Robert Lee Vaughn (1875-1905). Because the list runs to 50 names, the full grandchild list is recorded in the vault research note rather than here.
  • Sarah Ann Margrette Vaughn Burns (1856-1905) married into the Burns line, and a granddaughter, Nancy Ann Rebecca Gilliam Swann (1881-1975), into the Swann line.

His son, identified: B.H. Vaughn - the man who built the bridge at Smith Ford by hand in 1895 and wrote the 1932 Southern Democrat letter that is the primary source for early Hayden - is Burrell Hartwell Vaughn (1852-1934), listed among his children above. Confirmed by his obituary date (7 June 1934) matching Burrell Hartwell’s death (30 May 1934), not by initials alone.

  • Where he came from, and who he married. He moved to Cedar Bluff, Alabama from South Carolina in the mid-1830s and on to Blount County during the 1850s. He married Lida Ann Elizabeth Mapp on 13 August 1839, a date recorded in the family Bible, and they had thirteen children - four more than are listed above. Among those not previously named here: Eliza Jane Vaughn (1845-1920), Martha Emily Loueza Vaughn (1850-1878), who married Robert Houston Burns, and Daniel Ira Thomas Vaughn.
  • He lived and died at Harkness. His obituary in the Blount County News and Dispatch, 20 February 1902: “In the death of Ab Vaughn, at Harkness a few days ago, Blount county lost an old and highly respected citizen.” A county death record places his burial in “Walkers Beat,” where Union Grove Cemetery sits - and his grave is unmarked.
  • His wife’s church, and a son’s ministry. Lida Ann died at Harkness on 28 October 1895, aged 77, after sixty-one years in the C.P. church - now Center Hill Independent Presbyterian Church. Their son Rev. Richard Wilson Vaughn was a minister there for many years.
