Born 1767, died 1860 - the documented root of the McAnally/McAnnally family, whose descendants are buried across Guinns Cove, Hogeland, and Elvester cemeteries. His wife was Catherine Elizabeth Skelton McAnally (1770-1849). Six children are documented on his memorial, and the family intermarried with both the Hogeland and McPherson lines - his son John C. McAnally married Mary McPherson (1802-1880), and two of John C.’s daughters married Hogeland men.
Appears in: Guinns Cove Cemetery, Hogeland Cemetery, and Elvester Cemetery.
Notable descendants:
- Rutha Jane McAnally Whaley (1786-1887), John C. McAnally (1792-1876), Nancy McAnally Pannell (1796-1825), Elijah McAnally Jr. (1804-1869), Edmond McAnally (1809-1874), and Catherine McAnally Pannell (1810-1865) - his six documented children.
- Grandchildren via Elijah McAnally Jr.: Benjamin Franklin McAnally (1828-1900), John Calvin McAnally (1830-1892), Abram M. McAnnally (1832-1906), Nancy Ann McAnally Calvert (b. 1836), Elizabeth “Eliza” McAnnally Goodwin (1844-1919), Amanda McAnally Holt (b. 1852), and James M. McAnally (1865-1938).
- Grandchildren via Edmond McAnally: Mollie McAnally (1826-1850), Catherine McAnally Pannell (1830-1921), David McAnally (1834-1907), John Calvin McAnally (1836-1920), Corp. Dutton T. McAnally (1842-1907), Reuben F. McAnnally (1843-1896), and Andrew Jackson “General Jack” McAnally (1848-1930).
- Grandchildren via John C. McAnally: Elizabeth McAnally Hogeland (1818-1855), who became the second wife of Abraham Hogeland; Catherine McAnally Hogland (1837-1918), who married Alexander A. Hogland (1839-1923); and Rachel Lugana McAnally Bynum (1845-1941).
- Grandchildren via Rutha Jane McAnally Whaley: she married Alexander Whaley Sr. (1790-1863) and had nine documented children, including John W. Whaley (1815-1898) and Alexander Whaley Jr. (1822-1904) - making the large Whaley family at Guinns Cove Cemetery a McAnally line by descent. John W. married Nancy Ann Pannell Whaley (1822-1892); Pannell also appears twice among Elijah Sr.’s own children, so the McAnally, Whaley, and Pannell families intermarried repeatedly. Alexander Jr. married Debbie Ann McPherson Whaley (1828-1894), whose own parentage is undocumented - the marriage is real, but nothing ties her to Capt. George McPherson‘s family.
- Elijah McAnally Jr.’s Hogeland connection, confirmed from his biography. He married Eliza Hogeland (b. 1808, Kentucky) on 13 February 1825 in Blount County - ten children - and between 1835 and 1840 moved from Guinn’s Cove to Hogeland Creek, “the home place of his father-in-law Abraham Hogeland.” So Abraham Hogeland was his father-in-law, and the McAnally-Hogeland link runs through Elijah Jr. as well as through his brother John C.’s daughters. He married again in 1853, to Alcy M. Partin, and had six more children. His biography also records land purchases in Blount (1849) and Jefferson (1857) counties and an 1865 twenty-year mineral lease - stone, coal, iron ore, copper, alum and petroleum - on 120 Jefferson County acres.
